WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Prosecutors from Dakota County and Ramsey County are holding a joint news conference at 2 p.m. Friday to announce criminal charges against Brian Fitch in the shooting death of Mendota Heights Police Officer Scott Patrick.

Officer Patrick, 47, was shot during a routine traffic stop of Fitch's Pontiac Grand Am at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Dodd Road and Smith Avenue in West St. Paul. Roughly 8 hours later, Fitch was taken into custody following a shootout with police near Sycamore Street and Rice Street in St. Paul.

'I hate cops and I'm guilty'

Fitch, 39, sustained multiple gunshot wounds after he opened fire on St. Paul officers in a parking lot off Sycamore Street. He was listed in serious condition Friday morning at Regions Hospital. According to the charges, Fitch told the St. Paul police officer standing watch over him at the hospital, “Just to let you know, I hate cops and I’m guilty.”

The charges

Dakota County and Ramsey County will use a multi-county grand jury to combine the charges against Fitch into a single, joint prosecution. The charges against Fitch are as follows:

Dakota County: First-degree murder

Ramsey County: First-degree attempted murder (2 counts), second-degree assault (3 counts), drive-by shooting (3 counts), illegal possession of a firearm (1 count).

Summary of charges

- Video from Officer Patrick's squad car helped identify Brian Fitch as the suspect.

- Officer Patrick was shot in the leg, abdomen and head.

- A search of the Grand Am that Fitch was driving turned up one 9mm shell casing in the driver’s side. The casing has been submitted to the state crime lab for analysis.

- Officers seized a Smith &Wesson M&P 9mm handgun with laser sight from the Hyundai Veracruz SUV Fitch was shooting from in St. Paul.

- A large amount of meth was found in the SUV.

- Kelly Hardy, 36, who was riding in the SUV with Fitch, was shot in her left leg and left elbow. She fell out of the vehicle and told police that Fitch wouldn't surrender. She has not been arrested.

- A third person jumped out of the SUV before the shootout with police in St. Paul. He said Fitch ordered him to drop him off a few blocks away, and tell anyone who asked that he fled to Canada.

A total of 6 officers from St. Paul and Minneapolis were involved in the shooting and apprehension of Fitch. Police said Fitch was located thanks to a public tip to Crime Stoppers.
