Detroit water department to repair fence it removed following vandalism

Posted: Updated:
CITY OF DETROIT -  "They've come in, knocked out the windows, stolen the siding, the wrought iron gate is missing, the bars are missing and no one seems to know anything," said Rev. Curtis Williams of Trinity Chapel Funeral Home.

Williams says that would not have happened if the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department repaired the fence he put up around the vacant house that he bought behind his funeral home in Detroit.

He says he put up boards and iron gates around the doors and windows. But the water department tore the fence down earlier this year to repair a water main.

"Some gentlemen here were working and the gentleman that I presumed was supervisor said, 'Don't worry about it we'll make sure your fence is back up,'" Williams said.

Days turned to weeks. Williams says he called and even wrote a letter to the water department. Even so, six months have passed and still no action.

"As long as the fences were up I had no problem with vandalism," Williams said. "Now that the fences have been gone, now I am having problems with vandalism.

Williams said he did not get a response from the water department until Saturday, that was until Fox 2 and Randy Wimbley called.

"I want to do everything that I can, to help the city as best as I can, as a pastor as a business owner," Williams said. "I want to do my part but I also need the city to do theirs."

Now it is.

The water department sent a crew out after Fox 2 left and plans to have the gate repaired by the end of the week.
