CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An investigation into an alleged southwest suburban gunrunning operation ended Friday with the arrests of two men and the seizure of about three dozen illegal weapons.

Daryl J. Mrkvicka, 72; and Thomas J. Burke, 42, were arrested following the investigation into firearms being sold out of a home in Tinley Park, according to a statement from Illinois State Police.

Officials searched Mrkvicka’s home in the 7700 block of Richardson Lane and found 36 firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition, according to ISP.

Mrkvicka was charged with unlawful sale of firearms and gunrunning, according to state police and court records.

Burke, of the 8500 block of Camelia Lane in Orland Park, was charged with conspiracy to commit gunrunning, conspiracy to commit unlawful sale of firearms, and solicitation to deface ID markings of a firearm, authorities said.

“The operation’s success is a result of the strong collaboration of law enforcement resources solely targeted at preventing straw purchases, reducing gun violence, and eliminating the number of illegal firearms entering our communities,” ISP Director Hiram Grau said in the statement.

“Because of the hard work of all the officers involved in this investigation, 36 guns have been seized and will never hit the streets or be used against innocent victims,” Grau said.

Both men were taken to the Will County Jail, were they were being held on $100,000 bonds, according to the Will County Sheriff’s office.

The ISP Firearms Investigation Unit, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and police from Chicago, Tinley Park and Orland Park investigated the case.
