CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man is facing weapons charges after being caught with a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag at Midway International Airport on Thursday evening, authorities said.

John Hart, 62, tried to go through a security checkpoint with the gun in his carry-on bag about 6:10 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Ana Pacheco said.

The loaded .38 caliber Lorcin Arms handgun was inside the bag as he tried to board a flight from Midway to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in Alabama, according to TSA spokesman Michael McCarthy.

The gun was discovered by TSA officers at the checkpoint, and they turned the man over to Chicago police, McCarthy said.

Hart, of Aurora, was charged with one felony count of trying to board an aircraft with a weapon, and one misdemeanor count of possessing a firearm without a valid FOID card, Pacheco said.

While it is legal to travel with firearms, McCarthy said TSA regulations require that weapons be kept unloaded in a hard-sided, locked case within checked luggage. Passengers also must declare any packed guns to the airlines.

Individuals bringing weapons to security checkpoints can face civil fines ranging from $1,500 to $11,000, McCarthy said.

This is the fifth weapon found in carry-on luggage at Midway this year, according to McCarthy.
