Fox 2's Derek Kevra flies with the Thunderbirds

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - The Thunderbirds will be flying at the "Thunder Over Michigan" Air Show this weekend at willow run airport in Ypsilanti.

F-16 fighter jets can travel as fast as 1,500 miles per hour - twice the speed of sound. They cost $32 million each and go from zero to 30,000 feet in under a minute.

On Friday, Fox 2's Derek Kevra got to fly in one.

The Thunderbirds are an elite group of US Air Force pilots who perform in air shows all over the world.

The name "Thunderbird" is a nod to Native American mythology. Legend has it that the Thunderbird is capable of creating storms where the thunder comes from its flapping wings and lightning shoots out of its eyes.

Kevra's day started with getting fit for a flight suit, and a quick medical exam and meeting his pilot.

Kevra then embarked on a flight from Willow Run Airport to Port Austin - it took about 10 minutes.
