Flood insurance: do you need it in Arizona?

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Tuesday's storm left many streets flooded, but it wasn't limited to just streets. Many home owners probably didn't even realize their homes were in danger.

If you live in a flood zone identified by the government then, you're required to have flood insurance, you pay it along with your mortgage.

If you don't live in a flood zone, you're not required to have insurance, but it can be a good idea to have it anyway, and it's not expensive.

Video from last year showed floodwaters invade a house at the base of South Mountain.

"I have an emergency, water from the flood has come in the basement and burst open all my doors and windows," said a caller.

It happened again with this week's storm, again near the base of South Mountain. Judy Mercado was coming home from work when she got a call from her boyfriend Michael Gallegos.

"It was just horrible; the stream of water just came rushing down, he did not have time to react," said Judy Mercado.

The flood left a brown line on the wall a couple of feet from the base of the floor. The Mercado's have homeowner's insurance, but it doesn't cover floods.

They didn't buy flood insurance because they don't live on a flood plain, but they wish they bought it anyway.

Judy is thankful no one got hurt, including their 15-year-old German Shepherd Smoky, but it will take a long time to clean up and rebuild.

Flood insurance cost can vary. RP Ryan Insurance said that if you're not in a flood zone the insurance might cost $300 a year, and there are limits on the coverage.

If you're in a flood zone you're required to buy flood insurance and in some places, like Cave Creek, flood insurance can cost over $1,000 a year.
