ROUND LAKE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The investigation into a north suburban shooting last week got help from residents, resulting in an arrest and a drug bust in the same block, the Lake County News-Sun is reporting.

Officers were questioning alleged gang members Aug. 12 after multiple gunshots were fired at a house in the 400 block of Fairlawn Drive in Round Lake Park, according to George Filenko, chief of the Round Lake Park Police Department.

During that investigation, Filenko said someone came forward and said a man in a red shirt and dark shorts ran to the back of the lot and appeared to hide something before running back inside the house.

A search of the backyard turned up a garbage bag containing 63 grams of marijuana, Filenko said, as well as several smaller bags packaged for sale, a scale and three glass pipes.

Arturo Lopez, 18, of the 1100 block of Fairfield Road in Round Lake Beach was arrested Friday and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession with intent to deliver.

“I have to give the citizen credit. People are getting fed up with this and they contacted us,” Filenko said. “Community awareness and cooperation once again were key in this arrest.”

The report of multiple gunshots came abour about 11:40 p.m. on Aug. 12. A preliminary investigation found it was gang-related and the target lives on that block, Filenko said.

No one was injured in the home, which Filenko called a known gang house.

After the shooting, local gang unit investigators teamed up with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to conduct surveillance on reputed gang members in the area.

Hugo Moreno, 22, of the 600 block of Ivy Court, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a Class 2 felony.

He was arrested the day after the shooting, also thanks to a tip from the community, police said.
