Hometown Hero: Leslie Simons

Posted: Updated:
Sometimes, a simple “Thank you” can go a long way, and Leslie Simons is a woman who knows the true meaning of gratitude.

Simons was homeless and endured years of hard times, but she had creativity in her soul.

She went to the Austin Street Shelter for a safe place to stay, and now, she makes 14 thank you cards each week for volunteers at the shelter, signed by the shelter's clients.

Simons grew up doodling, as she calls her colorful art. Each week, she draws flowers, clowns, or mailboxes with beautiful colors on the thank you cards.

Leslie says it's appreciation for people who "donate food, clothes, their time and talk to us like we're human.”

Up to 350 men and women are at the center each night.

The civic and religious groups that volunteer are truly touched by the extra show of thanks.

Simons is currently in a work program and working to get her own place.
