Sultan of Brunei wants the Plaza Hotel

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Sultan of Brunei owns the Beverly Hills Hotel in California, where a human rights group staged a boycott and protests this summer. The same group is telling the sultan that if he buys the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, he can expect the same here.

Joshua Rahlan of Human Rights Campaign is urging New Yorkers to make it clear to sultan that he should take is business elsewhere. The campaign is taking aim at an investment group associated with the sultan because it is looking to buy the famed Plaza Hotel and the Dream Hotel on West 16th Street. Their objection is because the sultan is enforcing new laws in Brunei that allows the stoning of gays and adulterers.

This summer, the organization staged a boycott and protests at the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Hotel Bel-Air, which the sultan owns, and plan to do the same here in New York.

The campaign has reached out to its membership, prominent Americans, business owners, and philanthropists to urge them to avoid these hotels.
