PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The heavy monsoon rain means the employees at the flood control district of Maricopa County are working overtime, monitoring the ever changing situation.

"We've just been seeing a lot of water coming down, and it's coming down in one place at one time really fast," said Joe Munoz.

Engineers, hydrologists, and meteorologists are in what's called the alert center today, watching more than 300 gauges through the county.

"The rain gauges are a way for us to measure when the rain is coming downs o we know the volume of water that's coming down, and from that we can calculate it and tell how long it's going to be before it gets to an area where it's going to cause some damage," he said.

Tuesday's storm already caused some major damage in north Phoenix. Skunk creek jumped it's banks after that particular area received more than 4 inches of rain.

"We have a good rain, bad rain situation as what I call. Good rain is for us to get that kind of rainfall over a period of the monsoon season. Bad rain is when we get that in 30-40 minutes which is what we got.

After Tuesday's soaking there is more rain in the forecast for Wednesday. Employees are monitoring the prospects of even more flooding again.

Flood control employees also help first responders in deciding when and where streets need to be blocked off.
