Jackie Robinson West defeats Texas to advance in LLWS

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The magic continues for Jackie Robinson West.

“It means a whole lot to me in spite of everything that's going on in the city of Chicago. These young guys are a beacon of hope. With all the shootings that's going on in the city, these young guys bring a whole lot of hope to the city,” said fan Dennis Emmons.

On Tuesday, it was a defensive gem that helped JRW pull away with a 6-1 victory.

“You would never think that some kids from Chicago that love the game they play, would get this far and do so amazing,” said Timesha Wharton, who is the cousin of a player.

The crowd of several hundred people -- who once again gathered at Jackie Robinson Park on the Southwest Side -- exploded with smiles and joy as once again their team proved it is among the best of the best.

“Chicago is due for something good, there's too much bad stuff going on in the news, things going on in this city, but we really need this right now, I'm so proud of those guys, so proud,” said fan Michael Smith.

Tuesday's victory never seemed to be in doubt as JRW took an early 3-0 lead and never looked back.

The magical run for these 11 and 12-year-olds has proved to be a real point of pride, not just for people on the South Side, but for people across Chicago. And they love the positive publicity, not just for their beloved team, but also for the city itself.

“And I wish this message could go out to everybody, pick up a bat and a ball and put a gun down. I really wish this gets across, but I'm very proud of them, I don't even know what to say,” said fan Cathy Rogers.

On Wednesday, Jackie Robinson West gets a much deserved day off and will play again on Thursday.
