Unauthorized traffic stops in Greene County

Posted: Updated:

A county manager is accused of making unauthorized traffic stops in Greene County.

A truck driver says he saw flashing lights so he pulled over, but he says the man behind the wheel of an official county car told him he wasn't law enforcement.

Byron Lombard is the Greene County Manager and EMA Director. Greene County Sheriff Chris Houston says he is not an officer, but gave the perception of one when he turned on his red flashing lights to get through traffic.

Houston says in addition to the flashing lights, Lombard can be seen in a dash cam video carrying a gun on his hip. Lombard argues that it was not a gun and says it was his cell phone. The video has been turned over to the district attorney.

Lombard told FOX 5's Denise Dillon, off camera, he feels he was acting in an official capacity of the county. He says as EMA Director he is charged with protecting lives and the safety of the public.

The Sheriff has turned over all of his findings to the D.A. who will determine if charges should be filed.
