Vacant house notices in Warren invite thieves to break-in say residents

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) - Johnny Persyn and his family lived in his Warren home for 10 years. Now they're selling it.

They keep  the curtains closed, lamps on timers and they come by twice a week

"It's been empty since March," he said. "We had no problems until after the stickers got put on in June or July, and then two weeks ago is when the home was broken into."

"Thieves are breaking into these houses that they're seeing these stickers because they know they're empty."

The stickers are notices from the city's department of property maintenance to register the vacant property with the city and pay a $200 registration fee.

The stickers went up while the family was on vacation, shortly after the scrappers broke in. They stole the hot water heater - and nearly blew up the house.

Persyn said he feels that the stickers advertise to, "come break in, we're empty."

He says police told him that this isn't the first time they've seen this.

"If I was a crook or something I could have a good time," said Beatrice Birdsong.

Birdsong lives nearby and says there are three homes on her street with these stickers on the front windows.

Warren's department of property maintenance admits it's an open invitation - but says nothing seems to get the attention of  homeowners unless they put up this notice on the front window.

Persyn says he hopes this doesn't happen to another homeowner.
