Police: Suspect May Be Involved In Multiple Robberies Targeting Elderly

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia Police say they're looking for a suspect responsible for about a dozen strong-armed robberies of mostly elderly people.

According to authorities, the suspect strikes when the victims leave various banks with cash. Police say the suspect follows the victims.

"He's walking back and forth in front of the banks and when he sees an elderly person that might be a good target he goes into the bank," said Northeast Detective Lieutenant Dennis Rosenbaum.

The robberies date back to April 24th with the most recent robbery happening on August 13th. According to authorities, the robberies are occurring in Northeast and East Police Divisions in Bustleton, Rhawnhurst, Castor Gardens, Mayfair ,Pennypack, Juniata and Northern Liberties neighborhoods. The victims range between 44 and 96 years old.

"It's bad. It's pretty low and it's cowardly," said Captain Burgmann.

Police say the suspect is violent. One victim is currently in the hospital for injuries he suffered during the attack and robbery.

"Some of these people are frail, they're elderly and frail. They knocked them down, they punch them, and they maced at least one of them, so they'll do whatever they have to get them then reach into their pockets and rip the money out,” said East Division Detective Captain Mark Burgmann.

Two cars have been used, police say, a small white one and a silver Chevy Malibu.

The suspect is believed to be 45 to 50 years old with a gray beard and gray patch on top of his head, according police. The suspect has gotten away with $500 to $1,000 in some cases.

Police say they are still investigating if the suspect is acting alone.
