FORT WORTH, Texas -
A last-minute fundraiser for Megan Ritzi raised nearly $12,000 for her medical expenses.
18 year old Ritzi was critically injured in a horrific car accident on July 29th outside of Waco. The accomplished musician and three other friends were on their way to Baton Rouge for a clarinet festival when the truck they were in veered off the road and crashed into a tree. Two others in the truck died.
Ritzi lost the lower part of her leg right leg and her left big toe. Her pelvis was shattered.
“I can only imagine what it's like to just graduate from high school and have your whole life in front of you and have your whole life completely take another direction and change,” says friend Emily Villanueva.
It’s taken weeks for her to smile, but just a few days ago something changed.
“She was in high spirits, had a lot more energy, completely optimistic,” says her father, William Ritzi.
Megan’s story has sparked a change in hundreds of people online and in the North Texas community.
“It’s a huge financial burden and we really love them and we wanted to pull something together to really help them,” said Villanueva.
“We're there and we're going to support her and we are going to help her accomplish what she needs to accomplish,” said Megan’s father.
Various items were auctioned off to help raise money, including a sketch of the Baylor University mascot playing Megan’s favorite instrument, the clarinet.
Money raised will be added to the GoFundMe account created for Megan. At last check it was nearly $40,000.
