Woman bitten by rabid raccoon she thought was cat

Posted: Updated:

HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) - An 88-year-old Hamden woman was hospitalized after being attacked by a raccoon she mistook for her cat.

That raccoon has now tested positive for rabies.

Police say the woman, whose name has not been released, heard a sound at her sliding glass door Sunday and opened it to let her cat inside. Police say it appears the raccoon followed the feline into the home.

A short time later, the woman was attempting to pet what she thought was her cat when the raccoon attacked, biting her on the arm and face.

She was taken by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Police say the raccoon was killed after charging at two officers who responded to the home. Authorities say the remains are being tested for rabies.

Authorities say the carcass tested positive for rabies Tuesday at a state Department of Public Health lab.
