Swedesboro Liquor Store Owner Accused Of Racist Comments

Posted: Updated:
SWEDESBORO, N.J. -

A quiet little liquor store in Gloucester County is stirring up a big controversy. The store's owner is under fire accused of making racist comments to customers.

And that has some in Swedesboro residents boycotting the store and demanding it close for good.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell has the story.

The doors are closed at King's Liquor Store in Swedesboro. And this is one reason why; a sign on the door telling customers don't talk to the clerk. The clerk doesn't want to talk.

Well, some customers say the unwelcoming sign is just the beginning.

Tyra Causey remembers the exact day she stopped shopping at King's Liquor store last year.

It was her anniversary on April 19th of 2013, and she stopped to get a bottle of wine for her husband; however, she says never made it inside.

"I couldn't even get in the door. I came, I went to open the door. He locked the door and I stood outside,” she said.

Causey, a retired Air Force Master Sergeant says owner, Mario Falciani, locked her out of the store.

"I am standing there outside, I'm black. He locks the door. White patrons come up, he let them in,” said Causey.

In response to the allegations, Swedesboro officials suspended Falciani's liquor license for 30 days. To keep it, he agreed to install video cameras for officials to review, and to undergo sensitivity classes.

Since Causey's complaint was filed with the city, we've obtained police reports, alleging similar behavior lodged against King's Liquors.

In one incident, a black customer reported he wanted to buy a soda, but Falciani suddenly refused service saying, "It's not for sale." Then, a black female says the owner called her a "f-ing n-word" and her husband told "I don't want your kind in the store.

Other customers have had other strange encounters.

“It's an odd experience. You could easily hear him yell at somebody or yell at you if you say something,” said Swedesboro resident Larry Lero.

Falciani wouldn't answer of FOX 29's questions as he drove away.

FOX 29's spoke with Felciani's brother, also his attorney, denies his brother is a racist and is misunderstood. But he does confirm, the store as of Wednesday, is closed indefinitely and is now up for sale.

"I don't have to serve this country to go into a store but I happened to have done that. So, I should be able to go into any store we want and we all should. That's why we fight,” said Causey

Local police say there is really nothing they can do since they couldn't find any evidence of a crime. We've also learned the store has applied to transfer its liquor license to another owner.
