Anti-racism coalition threatens to sue U of M over Redskins name

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media is threatening to sue the University of Minnesota if they use the Washington Redskins name when the team travels to TCF Bank Stadium to play the Vikings on Nov. 2.

According to the facility use agreement, the Vikings have full jurisdiction over TCF Bank Stadium on NFL game days, but NCRSM director Clyde Bellecourt says they want the U of M to enforce its contract to ban the Redskins name from the stadium and get the Vikings to ban Redskins jerseys and face paint from the game.

The NCRSM outlined their objectives and a series of actions they indent to initiate against the NFL, the Vikings and the U of M at a press conference on Thursday.

“The "R' word and mascot incorporate the hate speech of the "N" word with the minstrel show of sacrilegious fan behavior and the nightmare of the murder by scalp of thousands of indigenous men, women and children,” they said in a news release.

Debate sparked at home when the Vikings hosted the Redskins for Thursday Night Football last November – a host of protests surrounding the Metrodome -- but with TCF Bank hosting Vikings games until the new stadium is complete in 2016, the U of M says it is making “every effort” to ban the Redskins name. The U is also working with the Vikings to “eliminate the use of Washington's team name in promotional and game date materials and public address announcements,” according to a letter from president Eric Kaler to U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.).

Rep. McCollum wrote that letter to Vikings owner Zygi Wilf in June asking him publicly condemn the name as it violates the Board of Regents' policy on equity and diversity. The Vikings have said they are taking the issue very seriously. The NFL, however, requires the Vikings to participate in marketing of opposing teams.
