Police shoot, kill man outside Ramsey daycare

Posted: Updated:
RAMSEY, Minn. (KMSP) -

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office says a man was shot and killed by police on Thursday afternoon after he pointed a gun at officers while running away from a "suspicious vehicle" parked near The Learning Lodge.

A sheriff's spokesman said workers at the day care called to report the vehicle, which had three men inside and had been parked for about 30 minutes. Sommers went on to say that when officers arrived, one of the men got out of the car and pointed a gun at police. At that point, police opened fire and fatally shot him. Although multiple spent casings were found at the scene, it remains unknown whether the man who was killed fired at officers as well.

The two other men in the car were arrested, and a crime scene team from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension arrived shortly before 6 p.m.

No children injured, but day care to stay closed Friday

When Fox 9 called the day care to confirm the details heard over the police scanner, a frantic care provider simply said, "We're trying to deal with our children right now. No comment."

At a press conference shortly after the incident, Cmdr. Paul Sommers stressed that no children were injured when the shots were fired. The day care was locked down for about 30 minutes, and the children were moved to a nearby church with a law enforcement escort.

"I was terrified," Erica Levercom admitted. "I didn't know what was going on. My mom had called. She saw the news."

Parents who arrived to pick up their children found the center surrounded by yellow crime scene tape and police following up on the brief but deadly pursuit -- and they will have to make different arrangements for child care following the fatal shooting. At 6 p.m., the day care center announced the facility would remain closed on Friday. Even so, parents like Levercom say they're just grateful that no one connected to the Learning Lodge was hurt.

"Everything is great. They're wonderful. I can't even thank them enough," she said.
