PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Officials with the Arizona Game and Fish Department are seeking tips in the unlawful killing of a desert tortoise north of Fountain Hills.

The tortoise was being monitored by wildlife officials as part of a research study.

Biologists on August 18th last observed the tortoise, numbered #679, and they found her dead on August 25th.

"The illegal killing of wildlife is always a concern, especially when that animal is non-threatening like the tortoise and it is part of a long-running research study," said Josh Hurst.

Wildlife authorities began tracking "679" in 2010 and had located her 300 times before her death.

Anyone with information on the killing can call the departments "Operation Game Thief" hotline at 800-352-0700, there is a reward of up to $1000 for any information that leads to an arrest.
