Labor on Labor Day at Banner Desert Medical Center

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - It's not Labor Day without some actual labor right?

Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa is busy with expecting patients.

Inside the maternity wing at Banner Desert Medical Center, there are plenty of families here laboring on Labor Day, getting ready to welcome a new member of the family.

"Woke up at 2 a.m. with some pretty hard contractions, woke up because I was hungry," said Amber Thurston.

Those hunger pains turned into labor pains, in no time Amber was awaiting the arrival of little Andrew, his daddy nearby.

"You've been expecting it for the last few weeks or so, when the due date comes you might get kicked a little bit in the time go, she's like ok time to go, time to go," said Lance Thurston.

Amber and Lance are one of many couples having a reason to celebrate this Labor Day; they're adding a third baby to the mix.

"They've been asking for a month; when is the baby gonna be here. And we have a big calendar at home that says baby Thurston is due," said Amber.

"It's a pretty busy day today, came in and not sure what to expect, and I think we have nine women in labor right now, we have had five c-sections, and I think three inductions, we never know what's going to walk through that door next," said Kippy Duffin, a nurse in the wing.

"It's always a new feeling because it's a new person, a new soul that's coming into the world. But at the same time, yeah we've been here a couple of times, so it's a little bit familiar," said Lance.
