Man stabs pitbull at adoption event

Posted: Updated:
NEWNAN, Ga. - Everyone seems to agree what happened Sunday at the Newnan PetSmart was horrific. The question is, was it criminal?

The Humane Society was holding an adoption event at the store and one of the dogs looking for a home was stabbed at least three times with a pocket knife.

The dog was a pit bull named Clara.

"She was a sweet dog," said Erin Barr. "I never saw her be aggressive towards dogs or people."

Barr says she met Clara several times. She also witnessed the terrible fight.

According to witnesses, Clara got loose from a leash and confronted a terrier who was at the store with her owner. Clara latched on to the terrier's ear and would not let go.

Barr says Clara was not overly aggressive.

"She had the ear and a little bit of the loose skin in her mouth. Usually they'll snap or shake their heads, she wasn't doing any of that."

A Petsmart employee described the same incident as an "attack", according to the police report.

Either way, the terrier's owner began kicking Clara and yelling at her. The police report says this went on for about 15 seconds. Then the man pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed Clara.

"The worst part to me, was that when they got the dogs apart, he stabbed her one more time," said Barr. "He continued to stab. That's not right."

FOX 5 could not reach the terrier's owner, but according to the police report he says he was protecting his dog like he would protect his child. He also said, he feared Clara would come after him or his son, if he didn't act.

"Protect your animals," said Barr. "But there's a difference between protective force and lethal force."

Both dogs were injured in the confrontation. The Humane Society says Clara's injuries were so severe, she had to be put down.

A spokesperson for Petsmart told FOX 5, the company is taking the situation seriously and is cooperating with police.

FOX 5 saw animal control officers at the Petsmart Tuesday. Newnan Police say their investigation is just now beginning. They hope to know if charges, such as animal cruelty, will be filed within a few days.
